Does your private health insurance policy cover you for past illness?
One of the many questions we get asked is ‘will my existing medical condition be covered’. The answer more often than not is ‘YES’ but probably not straight away.
From the day you establish your policy all new medical conditions are considered. All private treatment needs to be agreed by the insurer and generally nearly all will be approved for treatment.
Insurers will take into account if it is an acute or chronic condition:
Acute – The illness will respond to treatment and get better in a reasonable amount of time.
Chronic – The illness is ongoing indefinitely and will not respond to treatment to cure the condition. Asthma is an example of this. Insurers do not offer or provide limited cover for chronic conditions.
Generally medical treatment is not covered if is it cosmetic. So getting your nose straightened, jaw line re aligned and cheek bones toned is a no no!
